The Trent House Association was founded to
preserve, with the City of Trenton, the 1719 William
Trent House as an historic house museum to be operated
expressly for the purpose of public education. This
purpose includes the preservation and interpretation
of the William Trent House in order to enhance public
awareness of the history and architecture of early Trenton
and colonial New Jersey, as represented by the life
of William Trent, his family and diverse household.
The primary function of the Association is as steward
of the furnishings collection developed from Trent's
1726 inventory. The collection
is maintained and held in trust by the Association in
perpetuity for the sole purpose of furnishing the William
Trent House Museum. This collection provides much of
the interpretive basis for both house tours and programming.
The goal of the City of Trenton and the Association
is to create a complete representation of the lifestyle
of William Trent; this includes not only his story and
that of his family, but also a larger picture that encompasses
all strata of colonial society, including the historical
story of women, servants and household slaves.
The Trent House Association's contribution to public
education at the museum is accomplished through the
acquisition, exhibition, research and interpretation
of the Trent House furnishings, as well as the co-sponsorship
of workshops, seminars, lectures, and special programs
for adults and children.
